New Books for your Perusal ðŸ“š

New books are coming in all the time and don’t forget I take orders too. The Jackie Kay classic, Trumpet, has been serialized this week on Radio 4 – week of 27 Jan 2020 – so when you’ve listened to it you can pop in and buy it. Or, you can get in touch with me through the contact form on this site and buy any book remotely, and I will post out to you.

My Bookshop #1

As I sell new and second-hand books, I try to aim to have a book here for everyone. I want this to be the kind of place where everybody feels welcome. For those who haven’t been in yet, and I stress the yet, this is quite a small shop with a ground floor which I split between new and second-hand and an upstairs that has all second-hand. I also put out some second-hand stock on tables outside and pretend I am on the banks of the Seine.

Sharpie Signings of ‘Sometimes I’m So Happy I’m Not Safe On The Streets’

One of the best things of working in retail and especially a bookshop is that every day is different. Lucky me, I know. Dean Wilson, fab poet and all round good guy, popped in today and signed some more of his ‘Sometimes I’m So Happy I’m Not Safe On The Street’. Check out his twitter feed @PoetDeanwilson6 to keep up to date with his writing and performing as well as the pictures of his pebble of the day.

Reading Log

I started logging my reading on Twitter under #booklogjebooks in December 2019 and thought I should carry it over here too.

My first listed book is the excellent poetry collection ‘Cowboy Hat’ by Peter Knaggs. Peter and fellow poets Matt Nicholson, Mike Watts and Dean Wilson performed their work through megaphones from the upstairs window of J. E. Books and Beasleys here at Hepworths Arcade. This was on Saturday 7 December 2019 and was a lovely free event. I still can’t believe they agreed to do it – we really are lucky in Hull to have such fantastic and generous talent. This city is packed with great writers and artists, and readers of course.

I have also recently read Hilary Mantel’s ‘Bring Up the Bodies’. I read ‘Wolf Hall’ a while ago and thought I should catch up with this as the third in the trilogy, ‘The Mirror and the Light’ is due out soon in March 2020.

Currently, I’m on to Charles Dickens’ ‘Bleak House’ as this has been on my to be read list for a number of years and I’m determined this time. I’m also trying to catch up on my London Review of Books as I am still reading the 21 March 2019 issue. Wish me luck x
